A
common theme in President Trump’s speeches, according to NPR’s Sarah McCammon,
is the American flag. He often references religion along with the flag. The
President is quoted saying “one people, under one God, saluting one American
flag.” With a large following of Trump being White Catholic conservatives, this
goes over well. As for the rest of the United States it makes us wonder. What
ever happened to the separation of Church and State? Is referencing “God” in
the way the President does abiding by this? Or No?
Thomas Jefferson explained the
separation of church and state by saying “Congress Shall make no law respecting
an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” On May
4, 2017 Trump signed an executive order that allows Churches to be directly
related in politics and to be able to speak out in politics. Also, many of Mr.
Trump’s officials believe that the Separation of Church and State is
Unconstitutional. Yes, that’s right. A percentage of Trump’s administration believes
that laws and regulations should/could be based around religion. Now how does
this seem fair? Although three quarters of the United States says they are
Christian, is it fair to the remaining Americans.
As someone who does not identify
with a religion, or even believe in god for that matter, I think this is
absurd. Some might even argue this is unconstitutional. I would have to agree
with them. Let’s say Congress starts to pass laws based around religion or god,
it is quite certain these laws will follow the ideologies of the Devout
Christians. This will then interfere with other religions. My question has to
be how far will this be allowed to go? Will someone be able to be punished
because they do not believe in the Christian ideologies? Will this be an attempt
to convert the entire country to Christianity? There may already be an attempt
ongoing to convert the United Sates to Christianity.
As we are all aware, the teaching of
religion is prohibited in public schools. Meaning the spiritual parts of
religion cannot be taught in school, but the historical parts are allowed. I do
not see anything wrong with this, but Secretary of Education Betsy Devos does.
She has the same thoughts as the Vice President. Betsy Devos has funded organizations
with millions of dollars to support the teaching of “Intellectual Design.” This
is the conservatives’ way of saying Creationism without actually having to say
it. Creationism is the ideology that the world was started through divine
creation, like in the bible. Now Vice President Mike Pence has been heard
saying that Evolution is recognized as a theory, and he wants it to be taught
as such. Pence also wants other theories to be taught, such as Creationism.
There is a case in Kansas where a
man by the name of Bobby Henderson stood up to the Kansas State Board of Education’s
decision to allow the teaching of intelligent design. I look up to this man. In
order to destroy the credibility of religion, he decided to make his own. The
Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, otherwise known as Pastafarianism. The Religion
is known to be as legitimate as any other religion. They worship a meatball with
spaghetti legs. If this does not prove the absurdity of religion in school,
then I do not know what will. This man was able to make his own religion based
around a flying food monster, and under the Kansas State Board of Education’s
decision, was allowed to teach it to children.
All religion consists of is word of
mouth, and Blind faith. If it is something that helps to wake you up in the
morning, then I am an advocate of it. But do not push the beliefs of a religion
onto me or anyone else for that fact. Would you want your government to create
laws based around a Meatball with Spaghetti legs? Then why should they be
allowed to create laws based around a magical man whose father “created” the
earth in 7 days?
