A main theme in Ocean Breathes Salty is life and death. Many times in the song and video both are mentioned. "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?" Is the last line in the song. This is evidently about life and death, but some may argue that this song is a take on religion. We see a clear take on religion in the lines, "When the earth folded in on itself. (You missed) And said 'Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell (You missed, you missed) are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath.'" Where we can see this same take on religion is at the end of the music video, when the boy is leaving the graveyard of past animals he has failed to save from death, all rise from the ground as members of the band. He then turns and notices them. The way they fade in, but he still notices them could be a reference to the first line of the song "Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in. In my head, in my heart, and my soul" This is talking about the human's ability to grieve, but also the lack of need for an afterlife because humans carry the legacy of past people in their thoughts.
Also in the lines "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife." I believe that it is a shot at religious people. It is a shot at the fact they spend their whole life preparing for an afterlife, that they waste the life they know they have for something that isn't proven to be real. I think that this line is an exemplary moment in the song, because it gets down to the fact that religious people are wasting their lives chasing something that could not be there all because someone is telling them to. When they should just enjoy their lives, and do stuff that makes themselves happy not stuff to make their religion happy.
